What did this supposedly inspire ?
Master artist Derek Riggs created Iron Maiden’s mascot ‘Eddie the Head’ based on a Japanese head ( the pic above ) he saw on a television documentary .

It wasn’t from a tv documentary & that wasn’t the exact picture Derek used.
It was a propoganda poster.
I’m the person who scoured the internet one day to see if I could maybe find it somehow and came across the pic shown.
I sent it to Derek & he told me he wasn’t sure if it was the same head but the pic he used was definitely a more front on shot.
I posted the pic on a fansite & now it’s spread like wildfire and the image is everywhere on google & the details surrounding it keep changing.
I know who took the photo & what war time magazine it appeared in. It COULD be the same head, but it’s not the same picture Derek used.

No, unfortunately I don’t have the actual pic (nor have I even seen it).
The photo shown above was the only one I found that resembled anything Derek spoke of.
Then I posted it on a Maiden site & somehow it turned up on Blabbermouth.net (& everywhere else, like here), telling everyone it’s the picture.
Well it’s not, it could POSSIBLY be the same head but in my search I also found out that the practice of soldiers parading around decapitated heads wasn’t altogether uncommon.
Anyway, I’m in talks with Derek at the moment & he’s found it all to be pretty funny.
Soon he’ll be posting it on his site, to let people know it’s NOT the picture.
In the meantime I’ll always endeavour to find the actual pic.
