“The stamp shows the eruption of the Momotombo volcano in 1902. Initially there were plans to build a canal through Nicaragua. But these stamps were mailed to the US senate members and they decided to build it through Panama instead”

The  creation  of  the  canal  led  to  Panama  adopting  the  present  coat  of  arms  depicting  the  canal  in  the  centre  with  the  motto  “Pro  Mundi  Beneficio” – ‘ For  the  benefit  of  the  world’ .

  1. Sreeram says:

Nicaragua and Panama (then part of Colombia) were the two places considered for the construction of Panama Canal. Some senators used the stamp of Nicaraguan volcano to successfully lobby against Nicaragua.

The coat of arms should therefore be that of Panama.

Manjith asked this in his KQA Open quiz in July.

Is that panama getting the panama canal leaving nicaragua in the lurch thanks to the a volcano explosion in an island nearby Nicaragua, st Martinique killing thousands being shown in the stamp ??
